My son a F.1 student of Hong Kong Wah Yan College. Although it is not a DSS school, they try to raise money (in fact they have the ability to raise quite a large sum of money) so that all F.1 to F.3 students will have small classes for English, Maths and Chinese. The expriate teacher (for English) of my son's class is really good. She asks the students to do quite a lot of writing, eg journal, essay etc.
I also admire the direction of the school. Although their examination results are not particularly outstanding (partly because some good students studied abroad when they reach F.4 etc), their goal and target are good. They clearly stated that they wish to develop students' all round ability, organisation power and responsbility to serve the community.
For studying abroad, the old students and their parents are willing to share their experience. When my son is in the Wah Yan primary, they organised a sharing /briefing sessions for an English boarding schhool, whcih have admitted a number of Wah Yan students.
My son had lots of chance to participate in different activities, eg Chinese debating, orchestra, cross country and orienteering etc. these provide very good training for him. Many of these activities were lead by upper form students (although some will worried that it will aftect their examination results, the upper form students prove to be smart with good organising ability). My son enjoys the lunch hours as there will frequently be telent shows performed by students. Students who do well (in fact, no need to be very well, they just wish to give more chance to studhents to give performance/presentation) in the music examination will be asked to give performance during lunch hours. They said that the singer Lee Hak Kan also participate in the talent show when he studied in Wah Yan Hong Kong.
It is their style to be rather free (so the family will have to play their role to remind our sons to be self-disciplined), it has the disadvantage but advantage is that both teachers has a rahter big scope of flexibility. One will say that the teachers does not teacher according to the textbooks. but Wah Yan students have the ability to catch up by themselves and digest the contents of the textbooks. |
